Care For Your Hair Extensions
NEWS | 11/14/2019 Care for Your Hair Extensions

Now that we’ve talked about how hair extensions can help you achieve the new hair of your dreams, it’s time to talk about how to care for them properly. Proper care of your new extensions is important, not only because you want that new investment to last, but because you also want to prevent damage to your natural hair. To ensure you get the most wear out of your new Hairdreams extensions, it’s essential to get into the habit of maintaining them like a pro. Below, we will talk about the dos and don’ts when it comes to extension care.

Sulfate-free shampoo. While we recommend this for all hair, it's even more important to wash your extensions with only sulfate- or paraben-free shampoo, especially on the roots. Here at Von Anthony Salon, we recommend Oribe products for your every haircare need.

Avoid over-washing. This might seem counter to your natural instincts, but we recommend washing the hair less often. Use a dry shampoo to absorb oils and make your hair feel and smell fresh in between washes. If you have hard or mineral intense water, it may deteriorate extension bonds or the condition of the hair, so extending the time between washes will help to counter this problem as well. Additionally, don’t sleep on wet hair. Once your hair extensions are completely dry, braid the hair or tie it into a loose ponytail before bed.

Tame the tangles. Tangles are caused by the friction of your natural hair rubbing against your extensions. The best way to keep your hair tangle-free is to make sure to brush often. Brush 2 to 3 times a day and before showering or getting your hair wet. Be sure to hold the roots of your hair with one hand while brushing in a downward motion with the other. Brush gently, and be particularly careful around the bonds.

Avoid Heat. Avoid using heat tools as much as possible. Just like with natural hair, too much mechanical heat will damage your extensions. When you do use heat tools, be sure to use a heat protectant first.
