Spring is finally here, and while the longer days are a welcome change, temperature and humidity changes can unlock a whole host of problems for gals with curly hair. The good news is that there are easy things you can do to control unruly locks and keep your curls smooth and soft despite the changing weather.
Shampoo Less Often
Keeping your hair clean is important, but shampooing too often strips your hair of its natural oils. Since curly hair tends to be a bit on the drier side anyway, you really need to be careful not to over-shampoo your hair or you’ll end up with frizz and curls that can’t be controlled. Shampooing once or twice per week with a moisturizing smoothing shampoo is usually enough to keep your locks fresh without overdrying, and do not skimp on the conditioner.
Dealing With Frizz
Your hair needs hydration, but not from the air. The key to keeping frizz at bay is locking in the moisturizing nutrients from your hair care products while smoothing and sealing the cuticle to lock out excess humidity. For this, a humidity control leave-in conditioner will be your best friend.
Toss Your Hairbrush
If you’ve ever brushed curly hair when it’s dry you know the havoc it can wreak. Even wet it can have a similar effect, though not quite as severe. So just toss your hairbrush. You should be using a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle and work your styling products through while your hair is still wet.
Air Dry
The best thing you can do for your curls is to allow them to air dry without touching them. Touching your curls excessively will cause them to separate and poof up. Heat and air from a hairdryer will have the same effect. If you must blowdry, apply a thermal protectant, use a diffuser, and set everything to low.
Carry An Umbrella
Spring weather can sometimes be unpredictable. The last thing you want after going to all the trouble to have soft smooth curls is to have it all ruined by an unexpected shower. Keep an umbrella handy in your bag and in the car so you won’t get caught unprepared in a sudden downpour.
