Hair that is frizzy, dry, and uncooperative can be very frustrating, but it usually just needs a little extra tender loving care. You can usually solve these problems and make your hair more manageable with the right conditioning treatment. But how do these treatments work? That is what we’re here to discuss today.
Before you can understand how conditioner works, you need to understand your hair’s structure. Hair is made up of two layers, the cortex, and the cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer and is made up of cells that resemble scales that stack together and overlap to protect the cortex inside.
When your hair is healthy the “scales” of the cuticle fit tightly together forming a strong, smooth, protective barrier, but when the hair is dry and damaged the bonds that hold these cells together loosen. The cells of the cuticle then rise up which leaves gaps that expose the cortex. When this happens the cortex dries out and the surface of your strands is rough, creating tangles and frizz.
This is where your conditioner steps in to save the day. Conditioner infuses your strands with nourishing moisturizers and then smoothes the cells of the cuticle down to seal the moisture in. With moisture replenished and the cuticle smoothed and sealed back into place hair is left smoother, shinier, and more manageable with less frizz.
You can take it one step further with weekly deep conditioning treatments or masks. These products penetrate deeply into the hair shaft to deliver nutrients and moisture that nourish and strengthen the hair. Over time they can restore luster, improve elasticity to prevent breakage, and improve the overall health of your mane.
